The Sacristans are responsible for the preparation of the church and the altar for the various Masses, funerals, weddings and other services throughout the year.

Before Mass, the sacristans open up the church and make the preparations for the celebration of the Eucharist. They put the chalices, which are regularly washed, the communion dish containing the hosts, and the decanter of wine in place; also the linen and cruets. The missal and lectionary are placed open at the correct pages. Everything is put everything away after Mass.

The sacristans have responsibility for the supply of altar breads, communion wine, candles and other church requirements. They attend to the washing of some altar linen, and ensure the priest’s vestments are dry cleaned and mended as necessary.

At Holy Name Jane Cafferata works with a small team of sacristans, while Nelia Fregona looks after St Peter’s.
